How do I choose the right cameras?

The cost of a professional security camera system is influenced by far more than just the number of cameras installed. Each camera location plays a major role in overall pricing, as factors such as mounting height, the surface material being mounted to (drywall, concrete, brick, steel, or exterior façade), and the distance from the nearest network switch all affect installation complexity and labor. Higher mounting points may require lifts or specialized equipment, harder materials take more time and tooling, and longer cable runs increase both material and installation costs. Camera specifications also matter—higher-definition cameras, low-light sensors, audio capture, and advanced analytics all add value, but they also increase per-camera cost. In short, every camera is its own mini project, and thoughtful placement is key to balancing coverage, performance, and budget.

While camera hardware and installation are important, storage is almost always the most expensive component of a security camera system, and it scales exponentially with resolution and retention time. To illustrate this, consider a single camera recording continuously with audio for 10 days. A typical 4K (8MP) camera may require roughly 1–1.5 TB of storage for 10 days, depending on frame rate and compression. An 8K (33MP) camera, however, can easily require 4–6 TB or more for the same 10-day period—that’s four to five times the storage for just one camera. Multiply that difference across multiple cameras, and storage requirements (and costs) rise very quickly. This calculation applies per unit, meaning even small increases in resolution or retention can have a significant impact on system design and long-term cost.

Offsite cloud backups are another major cost factor, and like local storage, they are directly tied to resolution and the number of days retained. Cloud storage provides redundancy, disaster recovery, and remote access benefits, but it must be carefully sized to avoid unnecessary expense. Some businesses choose hybrid solutions—keeping high-resolution footage locally while backing up critical events or shorter retention windows to the cloud.
